Virginia Boydston Hill
Virginia Boydston Hill was born on April 7, 1932 to Verna and Jay Boydston at Childress, TX. She passed away peacefully at Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado in Grand Junction, CO, on October 22, 2012. Services will be held at Mesa View Church in Mesa Colorado at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 27th, 2012.
She was raised at Doyle, OK, in a farming community near Duncan, OK, and was the oldest of 7 children; her extensive family lovingly knew her as “Gen” and “Aunt Gen”. Regardless of being born during the Great Depression, she experienced a rich and vibrant upbringing, lacking for nothing while growing up on a farm and her family being heavily involved with other farming families in the area. Her parents were devoted Christians and instilled a legacy of enduring faith and adamant belief in the Word of God into their children, and this was powerfully evident in Virginia and how she lived her life and loved her family. She was well-known, well-liked and involved with her peers, She was Valedictorian of her graduating class of 1949.
She married her one true love, Dean Austin Hill, in 1951 after a lengthy pen-pal courtship while Mr. Hill was serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Benner. After being pen-pal sweethearts for two years, they met and courted in person at Lawton, OK, for approximately 11 days, during one of his Navy leaves, and shortly after returning to ship, he sent her the money to take a bus to meet him on his next leave. At age 18, she took a bus by herself to Rhode Island, and they were joined in matrimony and began their 58 year-long marriage.
Virginia and Dean had lived in Duncan, OK and Comanche OK during the first five years of their marriage, during which time they had four children, two boys and two girls. In 1961, they moved to Amarillo, TX, with their four children.
Virginia had been a devoted and highly successful mother and homemaker while her children were growing up. She was a stay-at-home mom and didn’t’ enter the workforce until her grandchildren were born. In addition to faithfully raising her own four children, she was exceedingly nurturing to her younger siblings, and her children’s friends. She was a key figure in raising three of her grandchildren, as well as being very involved in many of her great-grandchildren’s lives.
At age 40, she attended Texas State Technical College at Amarillo. Upon completion of the program at TSTI, she became Court Coordinator for former 47th District Court Judge, Brian Poff. Upon his succession in the court, she went to work for the Potter County Tax Office, where she retired.
Virginia had been very active and involved in local politics and the community, along with her husband, particularly during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, as well as heavily involved with Potter County law enforcement and County offices. Her younger brother, Jimmy Don Boydston, served four consecutive terms as Potter County Sheriff and had been an integral part of forming the Potter and Randall County Special Crimes unit. As ‘Don’s’ sister, mentor and confidant, Virginia had played a key role in his political campaigns and in his career as a homicide detective preceding his terms as Sheriff.
She is preceded in death by her parents Jay & Verna Boydston, her husband Dean Austin Hill, a son Michael O. Hill, a granddaughter Leah Marie Hill, a brother Jimmy Don Boydston and a brother Ronald Wayne Boydston. She is survived by a son & his wife Ben & Faith Hill of Grand Junction, Colorado. A daughter & her husband ReGena & Jesse Holalde of Wichita Falls, Texas. A daughter Mitzi Minkler & her husband Arthur Minkler of Amarillo, Texas. Fifteen grandchildren and thirty seven great grandchildren. Sisters Sue Villines, Jayleen Gallaher, and Raeleen Riddles of Duncan, Oklahoma.
